To furnish my tiny post-college NYC apartment, I needed a sofa — but I had to carry it up six flights of stairs. I decided the best way to make a sofa light and easy to transport was to make it easy to disassemble. I designed the sitting platform to be supported by four dowels, which could be removed to pull out and fold up the platform. The seat and back was strung up to support the cushions without adding extra bulk. The frame was inspired by a danish mid-century design, but simplified so I could cut and join it with my bare minimum toolkit (a drill and a saw) using the cheapest lumber (construction-grade pine 2x3s from the lumberyard down the block). After sourcing the cushions, I then designed the sofa dimensions to fit around them. After sanding smooth, I kept the wood finish simple with a few coats of danish oil.
